Pakistan Millers demand cheaper wheat import from India
Pakistan Flour Mills Association has demanded the government to allow wheat import from India via Wagha, with a view to provide flour to public at cheaper rates, as Indian wheat is cheaper by at least Rs150 per 40 kg.
Addressing a press conference, PFMA central chairman Zahoor Ahmed Agha said that Indian wheat costs the millers Rs1,140 per 40kg after including loading, unloading, duties and transportation cost while local wheat cost them around Rs1300 per 40kg. If federal government allows import of wheat from India via Wagha, it would also benefit to general masses, as the retail price of flour may reduce by Rs10-20 per 20kg bag, Zahoor Agha claimed.
He lamented that Pakistani wheat is most costly around the world and it is more beneficial for the millers to import wheat from rest of the world and re-export food products after value addition. He observed that Pakistan flour industry has become uncompetitive due to huge jump in support price of wheat announced every consecutive year by the last PPP-led government. Addressing the press conference, PFMA Sindh chairman Ch Ansar Javed told the media that Sindha government has withdrawn subsidy on flour and decided to adopt new procedure of target subsidy.
Flour millers criticized subsidy on flour sold at utility stores and demanded the govt to get supply for utility stores from all four mills equally.
